In those eight years 59,499 people migrated into the state with the majority coming from outside the United States. 7.2% of New Mexico’s population was reported as less than 5 years of age, 28% under 18, and 11.7% were 65 or older. Females make up approximately 50.8% of the population. Due to the recession as of April 2009 New Mexico had the 7th lowest unemployment rate in the country at 5.8%. The top five most populous cities in New Mexico are Albuquerque with 518,271, Las Cruces with 89,722, Rio Rancho with 75,978, Santa Fe with 73,199 and Roswell with 45,569 people in the city.
